Only Patricia Highsmith could make you basically fall in love with a psychopath, lulling you into a state of pure serenity - only to jolt you awake. ![]() The stylish, smooth-talking cousin of The Blunderer, and like that book, one of (I think!) Highsmith’s more underrated works, Deep Water similarly paints a picture of a seemingly perfect marriage bubbling with danger underneath. Here are some of my absolute favorites, in a particular order. Deep Water had all the ingredients for a successful film on paper: the return of director Adrian Lyne behind the camera after a 20-year hiatus, and a pair of charismatic leads in Ben Affleck. She revels in the gray areas of story - presenting readers with morally-ambiguous characters driven by base emotions, and dousing even the most mundane settings with crackling sparks of noir pathos. Segura: There are few authors I love more than Patricia Highsmith, and few novelists who loomed larger over my last novel, Secret Identity, than her and her work. Segura's latest novel, Secret Identity, comes out in paperback on February 7. We caught up with author and noted Highsmith fan Alex Segura to name and rank her six best books. Ripley, and Todd Haynes' Carol, the latter based on her 1952 novel The Price of Salt. Her slow-burning style of literary noir has hooked millions of readers and inspired numerous film adaptations, including Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train, Anthony Mingella's The Talented Mr. Novelist Patricia Highsmith, the queen of psychological suspense and intrigue, would be 102 years old today. ![]() ![]() ![]() What if the two sisters believe that the story is absolutely true, when-in fact-it wasn't? How could this be? Their father is presented as an unsavory character. However, it's a third possibility that makes this book so thought-provoking. One might be prone to think that there are two possibilities: either it's a true story or it's a hoax. (In large part this is because we know the programs that operated were not nearly so successful as the one in Secret Weapons.) However, while I'm well aware of the "mind control" programs sponsored by the American government, this story doesn't ring true to me. About a quarter of the book is supporting documents to lend the book credibility. The writers are eager to convince the reader that this is not a hoax. It is written as non-fiction, and not creative non-fiction that admits to blending elements of fiction into the fact. Like Whitley Strieber's Communion, this book leaves one engrossed but wondering what exactly one is reading. ![]() I hadn't ever heard of it before or seen it in my local bookstore, but I came across a copy at the Strand Book Store in New York on a trip several years ago. The first few pages alone had quotes that simply must be read aloud to any vulnerable audience: In Skin Game Jim Butcher is at the top of his form for writing urban fantasy with attitude, laughs, pop culture references and an engaging plot. My favourite opening line from this series of books is “The building was on fire, and it wasn’t my fault” ( Blood Rites), which says it all. He’s accident prone, especially when taking on the bad guys. Think Harry Potter but all grown up, a bit of a loner who’s loyal to his friends and mouthy to authority figures. Don’t get me wrong, I was really loving this book until I got to about the last quarter. I really want more darkness and more suspects.
